Helium

Ø It is used to fill airships and observation balloons.

Ø In the oxygen mixture of deep sea divers.

Ø In treatment of asthma.

Ø Used in inflating aeroplane tyres.

Ø Used to provide inert atmosphere in melting and welding of easily oxidizable metals.

Ø It is also used in gas-cooled nuclear reactors.

Ø Liquid helium (b.p. 4.2 K) finds use as cryogenic agent for carrying out various experiments at low temperatures. It is used to produce and sustain powerful superconducting magnets which form an essential part of modern NMR spectrometers and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) systems for clinical diagnosis.

Neon

Ø It is used for filling discharge tubes, which have different characteristic colours and are used in advertising purposes.

Ø Also used in beacon lights for safety of air navigators as the light possesses fog and stram perpetrating power.

Ø Neon bulbs are used in botanical gardens and in green houses.

Argon

Ø Along with nitrogen it is used in gas – filled electric lamps because argon is more inert than nitrogen.

Ø Argon is used mainly to provide an inert atmosphere in high temperature metallurgical processes (arc welding of metals or alloys).

Krypton

Ø Krypton are used in light bulbs designed for special purposes.

Xenon

Ø Xenon are used in light bulbs designed for special purposes.

Ø It is used in Flash lamps called Xenon flash lamps.

Ø It is also used in Stroboscopic lamps and photographic flashes.

Ø Lasers are generated with the help of Xe gas.

Ø The element Xe acts as a natural anesthetic.

Ø Inhaling the mixture of oxygen and xenon produces a hormone which helps to increase Red Blood Cell (RBC) production.

Ø It is used to measure the flow of blood and also used to image the Brain, Heart, and Lungs.

Radon

Ø Radon is used to track air masses to a limited level.

Ø Changes in groundwater radon concentrations help in the prediction of Earthquake.

Ø A process called Radon hormesis is used to mitigate auto-immune diseases like arthritis.

Ø It is used in the treatment of cell damage and cancer.

Ø Radon is also used in radiation therapy.
