CARBON AND ITS COMPOUNDS
Ø Organic compounds
are generally any chemical compounds that contain carbon-hydrogen bonds.
Ø Due to carbon's
ability to catenate, millions of organic compounds are known.
GENERAL
CHARACTERISTICS OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS:
Ø Organic
compounds have a high molecular weight and a complex structure.
Ø They are
mostly insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents such as ether,
carbon tetrachloride, toluene, etc.
Ø They are
highly inflammable in nature .
Ø Organic
compounds are less reactive compared to inorganic compounds. Hence, the
reactions involving organic compounds proceed at slower rates.
